Story Behind The Song

The story behind this song is mostly memories both good and bad. The Main subject is Cousin Wayne. Cousin Wayne served with an Air Calv unit in the central highlands of The Nam. Wayne was killed 3 Dec. 1968 in a firefight after only being in country for a month. After many years and a trip to the wall, I was inspired to write this song. I went to the Memorial searching for ghost. I found none there, however I did find memories, both good and bad. I must Dedicate this song to the memories of Wayne and his unit, which are all memories to someone somewhere today.

Song Description

Cousin Wayne was like most in my family. We were farmers and loved outdoors. We were from simple roots and could be entertained by simple things such as hunting and fishing which we were proficient. This song revisits my memories of the events of the 60's and includes in some way memories of all my cousins from Frog Level, (yes there is a place called Frog Level)

Grew up a child of the 60's, and went halfway round the world
John Deere Tractors and Millet Fields wouldn't make it with the girls
Never made it with the girls

Small town boy got a gun for a toy, in a rich mans selfish world
All that came back from Viet Nam
Was a memory of a small town boy,
Yea a memory of a small town boy

That long ago we couldn't know how life would get to be
We didn't know why time went so slow, why could we not see

That we were searching for things that could never be found
Trying to catch dreams that could never be bound
Always waiting but never was found, I looked and I'm still around

Thirty years ago we would never know
How screwed up things would be
Muddy fishing pounds and having fun, was all that we could see
Yea it was all that we could see

That long ago how was we to know how life would get to be
We didn't know how time went so slow, why could we not see

That we were searching for things that could never be found
Trying to catch dreams that could never be bound
Always waiting but never was found
I looked and I'm still around

Grew up a child of the 60's, and went half way round the world
John Deere Tractors and millet fields wouldn't make it with the girls

Never made it with the girls
